“At Waiākea Uka, we gather some of our favorite liko. The youngest buds of the ‘ōhi’a trees can be found in reds, oranges, burgundy and grey. The curled leaflets have their own character and are chosen to make our lei hula. The combination of rain and liko is the proverb that guides us daily: “Liko ka liko i ka ua!” The translation, “The-buds-reach-forth-in-the-rain.” A poetic interpretation is, “Children flourish with encouragement.”” – Kuha’o Zane
